The "real world" is a pure function of time -- therefore functional programming is the "right way" to model it.
Examining our mental model of the "real world" is not going to give us good insight about which programming tools will model it best.
I suppose building basic tools as Apache Thrift services would allow one the ease of prototyping ideas in Python before building a performant system in something like Java or C++.
BTW, Python describes itself as object oriented, so it illustrates my point that OO and functional are not at odds.
