These places are funny in a one-off kind of way, but I don't think you can draw any real lessons from them.

"We know what you like!"It reminds me of a documentary I saw about morbidly obese people, which, among others, followed a handful of women who had decided that they wanted to be fat. I couldn't quite figure out what their rationale was... they seemed to believe that they should be proud to be obese and make every effort to get more obese. They stuffed themselves with as much fried food as they could, as often as they could, and even made fun of one of their group who wasn't obese yet and seemed to struggle with the disgusting food they tried to feed her.
The fact that these people are supposedly the same species as me is a little worrying.
You're a computer programmer. Let me take a stab in the dark here: you are highly likely to have at least one habit which is socially marginalizing which you are actively proud of. You are probably contemptuous of people who do not share or understand that habit.
I would hope geeks could have a wee bit of empathy for folks who are reviled by society and decide that the proper response is a middle finger. (And I say this as somebody who got referred to the school counselors as anorexic three times because I didn't fit the image of what a Healthy Growing Boy (TM) should look like.)
You're perfectly free to feel revulsion at the notion of an eight megacalorie hamburger, but let's be a little careful with reading folks out of the human species.
What I find hard to swallow (no pun intended) is more the lack of any discernible intelligence displayed by someone who thinks they should get as fat as possible, as fast as possible, and yet is apparently not suicidal.
If you've decided to kill yourself, fine.
If you've decided to kill yourself to give society a big middle finger, fine.
If you've decided to do something unusual, fine.
If you've decided to do something unusual to give society a big middle finger, fine.
If, however, you've decided to do something unusual that will kill you in few years, to give society a big middle finger, and you're not even considering the fact that it will kill you (I can only guess at the reasons why), then there's something just plain broken about you, not from a societal point of view, but from a basic "self-conscious entity" point of view.
Now, if a dog eats itself to death, I wouldn't say that, because a dog doesn't have the means to understand that it's eating itself to death. But humans have the means to do so. Well, most humans do. Those who don't, are they really the same species, or are they more like another, self-unaware species?
(obviously that question is extremely tongue-in-cheek)
I'm not particularly interested in eating at a place like this, though, mostly because I use eating to enhance my enjoyment of other activities, like reading or watching TV, and while going to a burger place is great with friends, I hardly ever bother going out to those same places alone.

I know people who think lisp is a speech impediment.
I even know people who think emacs is a series of over-priced computers!
Yet I would not call any subhuman for their clearly irrational and self-destructive choices.
Except maybe the last.
