I like the idea but I don't understand how you could switch to a site that ugly.

I agree, but I've always found DDG results to be pretty terrible, so I just ended up using Startpage with some custom CSS.

Fortunately, there is a userstyle, aptly named "startpage clean & minimal", for fixing the ugliness.
