We wrote a Chrome extension for Github; It allows quick viewing and navigation to your repos, viewing your issues and creating new issues. It uses OAuth2 and is open source!

Why does it need write access to my GitHub account?

So you can create new issues :-)

If you don't like it having that, you can review the source and check it - we don't send it anywhere, the token stays in your browsers local storage!

Makes sense. Thanks.

Can you elaborate on the interview part? I'm not sure I get it :/

They got the interviewee to write this browser extension as part of the interview. Smart.

I really should do a blog post about it - a short version is that we;

1. Quick technical screen via phone which filters > 90% of devs :(

2. Phone interview for work history / explanation of what we do / etc

3. Lunch / coffee

4. Hack for a day / half-day with the team on something completely new

As someone who has started looking for jobs recently, that sounds like a great way to hire people. It gives you a chance to interact with the candidate and see how they work.

As a shameless plug, I also wrote a Chrome extension for GitHub. It lets you commit changes from Chrome Dev Tools to GitHub. It unfortunately took me a lot longer than half a day.

So for which company did the author of the extension apply? I guess it was a full day hack?

You can find it on their GitHub page. Looks like it might have been these guys https://www.rainforestqa.com/

how come it's faster than just having github bookmarked?
