This is not newsworthy.

Wow, libxml2 workarounds! I am going to download a new version immediately! I'm so glad that there was an article about this!

</sarcasm>

i still much prefer mplayer. it's more powerful, very cli & keyboard friendly

needless to say, i have less issues playing movies & audios as compared to vlc

Unfortunately it's absolute crap on OS X.

0.9.8 was more stable w/ hi-def 1080p AC3 MKV containers, 0.9.9 crashes so often that I've switched to NicePlayer for hi-def content.

0.9.8 didn't handle RM files properly (extreme skipping) however; 0.9.9 does.

Frankly the only reason I use it is because I don't know any better player. Not because it is that great. Any tips for good windows players?

Windows Media Player + KLite Codec Pack is great.

Yes, I know. WMP. It's really not that bad - what really matters are the codecs & AV processors in the background.

I prefered Media Player Classic in combination with the Combined Community Codec Pack on Windows (Download: http://www.cccp-project.net/)

CCCP is a must. I like Zoomplayer, but that's more personal preference.

I use GOM player, the good the thing about GOM is that it supports external codecs along with it internal ones too, unlike VLC. So you can use the CCP with this too, although they provide most of the codecs.

The external codec thing is a benefit for me because I use the CoreAVC codecs to play H.264 encoded files which have huge resolution (1080p) on my old PC. Methinks VLC should also allow external codecs.

That's odd - my installed copy (0.9.8 OSX-Intel) doesn't notice any upgrades available. Percolating slowly through the mirrors, perhaps?

You can grab the latest builds from here:

Thanks, but I don't want a nightly. Anyway I was "inspired" to go get 0.99 for myself, so thanks.
