I wonder if there's generally any correlation between things that taste sweet/pleasant and things that have other useful properties. There sure are a lot of examples of things that taste sweet but are absolutely awful for you... and a lot of examples of things that taste absolutely terrible but can be relatively good for you.

I always found it interesting that lead is sweet. I always heard the meme he’s dumb because he ate (lead) paint chips as a child and I could never understand why a child would eat paint chips until I realized the paint chips were sweet because of the lead. Also apparently lead was used by the Roman’s as a sweetener. The only true taste I think you should count on when eating strange food is bitterness, if you don’t trust the food and you have a strong bitter taste, spit it out!

pure lead, like any pure metal, is tasteless, but many salts of lead are sweet, so corroded lead can taste sweet, and also the white lead pigment that was used in the past is sweet.

There are several other metals whose salts are sweet, including beryllium and yttrium, which is why an alternative name for beryllium was glucinium, from the Greek word for "sweet".

That’s 5 people over the span of 9 years. Imagine how much vanilla ice cream is consumed every year.

„Sweet solution“ - anyone having tasted pure vanillin in a nontrivial dose, will tell you that it tastes absolutely disgusting. It only works in traces.

This is true for many (most?) flavor compounds. A little salt is nice, a teaspoon isn't.

Some sort of clove extract is used in dentistry as an temporary fix if a full root canal isn't feasible at the time. Got the tiniest whiff of that on my tongue during rinsing and it tasted downright toxic.
