I'd rather have a mechanism to remove the 100 GB of old simulator images for Apple Watch and TVOS, which I never use and which can't be uninstalled without disabling security and rebooting to safe mode all the time.

In Xcode, go to Window > Devices and Simulators in the menu bar (or press Shift+Cmd+2), then select the Simulators tab in the sidebar to open the list of simulators. Here you can select and delete simulators.

Sure if you've fried your brain so much you're incapable of doing anything at all for yourself.

It's not about brain. Time is limited. If you chase all these little things you die - death by a thousand cuts.

Chasing maximum productivity in an attempt to outrun time sounds a lot worse if you ask me.

That's one way to twist it. What I'm intending to say is that you offload tedious bullshit to AI agents so you can focus on stuff you enjoy and live your life. And for people that like doing things like changing xcode settings (more than time with their kids) there is nobody stopping them from doing that.

Somehow people already had time with their kids before Claude. And before computers. Enjoying life is not a technology problem.

When I read things like this all I can imagine is a farmer responding in a similar fashion to people talking about using tractors.

It would be more accurate to describe it as farmers renting out their fields and no longer practicing farming, so they forget how to farm.

People should really know how to delete sims, but there's a ton of obscure Xcode nonsense that in the "old days" people would blindly trust Stackoverflow answers or even blogs to fix. If Xcode is a tractor, it's the old thing you whack with a wrench and say "come on Bessie" to make it temporarily work again, not something most devs really understand.

This is how I always did it. Why would the alternative involve going into safe mode? Pretty sure I've manually deleted those files before too.

`xcrun simctl delete unavailable` will delete unavailable simulators. `xcrun simctl list` and `xcrun simctl delete <device-uuid>` will delete specific devices. I run unavailable all the time after updating to get disk space back.

`xcrun simctl runtime list` and `xcrun simctl runtime delete <runtime-uuid>` will clean up actual runtimes.

While I agree, that affects an order of magnitude smaller number of people.

Isn’t there a UI to remove those inside Xcode? I just used to trash them in Finder but it sounds like that changed.

For me once it redownloaded and the next time xcode just refused to work and didn't even redownload. So it seems it has changed (or for me). The problem is, with Apple you don't even know it was done hostilely or it was just their, now well-establisehd, software incompetence. Because in their case both are aplenty.

Because it would definitely be too difficult to do both for a ~$5T market cap company?

they have a ui/tool for that, but ok.
