You are pointing out a few parallels but I think the trends behind them are of vastly different consequence. Unlike social media and remote work, AI is truly a once in a civilization event. It raises deep questions about the nature of humanity that have historically been the exclusive domain of philosophy and religion.

Really? Like what deep questions?

For me LLMs are a step forward from previous ML approaches (some of them were and still are extremely useful anyway) and for sure are very useful to many people. They are very good at generating sensible output based on input created by millions of people, but very poor at creating anything really novel.

Is intelligence purely computational?

Is consciousness purely computational or at least an emergent property of it? If so do natural numbers have consciousness?

Aren't we on our 3rd or 4th iteration of AI at this point?

Technically, according to the industry, we've already moved on to AGI and SI at the same time.

Is any of the industry actually claiming SI yet? Trump recently had a vision again but other than that I'm not sure.
