In the late 1800s there was a cottage industry of mechanics and ironmongers selling and repairing small steam and kerosene engines used by rural mills and farms. There were horse drawn steam threshing machines. Bicycle repair shops sprang up. The Wright brothers got into the bicycle business before horseless carriages. There were many intermediate tech skills that led up to working on motorcars.
