> One of the biggest expenses of any A.I. data center was computer chips, which are made by companies like Nvidia and cost thousands of dollars each.

“Thousands.” Yes, in the same way that the earth is thousands of years old. 4.5 million thousands, but still, thousands.

The way I read that was that the chips cost thousands of dollars each, not the datacenter itself.

Those are still more accurately described as tens of thousands each. A single B300 is about 50k. A B200 or AMD MI355X is still about 30-40k each.

A B300 has 8 gpus, 2? xeon processors, and 2 fancy nics. Assuming all of those computer chips are equal value cause averages, that's ~ $4k per chip which fits the 'thousands per chip' pretty well.

I was counting individual B300 GPUs. A full DGX B300 with its 8 GPUs goes for 450k-700k
