The sooner they get rid of it, the sooner I'll stop using reddit and finally be free...

As a quick reminder:

First there was Reddit, which had an API, a mobile version (i.reddit.com) and a desktop one.

Then there was the redesign, after which there was new reddit, old reddit (old.reddit.com), and mobile reddit.

Then they removed mobile reddit.

Then they restricted the API.

Then they made old reddit available for logged-in users only, which they are now restricting even more.

It's obvious that they're slowly boiling the frog until there's only one bloated interface left.

Embrace, extend, extinguish.

"Embrace, extend, and extinguish" (EEE),[1] also known as "embrace, extend, and exterminate",[2] is a phrase that the U.S. Department of Justice found[3] to have been used internally by Microsoft[4] to describe its strategy for entering product categories involving widely used open standards, extending those standards with proprietary capabilities, and using the differences to strongly disadvantage its competitors. - wikipedia

For days, even after login, neither the automatic redirect, nor the 'click this link' page redirects properly if it all. Clicking it multiple times, sometimes works. The login also seems to expire quite frequently. So it's even worse than stated.

I can't believe that some people value their time so little that they moderate reddit in the mid 2020s.

That do it for free

I Selfhost redlib. Throw behind Tailscale and force redirect to it when hitting Reddit links. No issues

Reddit is killing RSS feeds and ending public API access because of AI bots

I'll say it again, the day they block me from old.reddit.com, is the day I leave the site permanently.

I've already made this migration after they started requiring a login. It's been pleasant.

Migration where?

> Migration where?

Off the doom scrolling device and back to reality!

Yeah my plan is to spend the next few months really thinking about what I need from Reddit, and trying to replace it with books.

The fediverse is one place

Why are you still there? Even if you are the 1% still on Old Reddit, you are looking a site created by the 99% on the app (or New Reddit). And that's why it has become a wasteland of image posts and inane 180-character quips. Conversation has declined even on more serious subs because the new interfaces hide most comments from uses by default.

I like /r/rust, /r/writing, and /r/sydney. I also like browsing by top of all posts for subreddits about things I don't know much about, like /r/sociology, or /r/meditation.

I don't think these are enough to make me want to stay on the site, because I can join the Rust Programming Language forum. I'm sure there is a similar analogue for the writing and Sydney subreddits.

Use redlib. It's crazy how much better the interface is than both old and new reddit.

same here. How to kill a platform 101.

Greedy fucks. I've hated them ever since they took RIF away from me.

> How to kill a platform 101.

..but the platform is owned by shareholders now. Who needs the original purpose and intent that got them here when they're sitting on the golden data egg in the age of AI, a page from the Tesla/Space playbook..

I wish this was /s

I had a 2005 (launch year) Reddit account. I deleted it when the API shenanigans happened and haven’t looked back. I have my browsers all set up to redirect Reddit.com to a Redlib instance. I will never visit or participate in the site again.

My biggest regret is that I didn’t anonymize & overwrite all my comments, so AI fuckery has access to them forever.

Edit: forgot the obligatory fuck /u/spez

Hasn't the redesign been around for like 8 years at this point? Kind of crazy they kept it around for so long.

Because it's still a big hunk of traffic, and moderators report relying on it (it loads significantly faster). They have bolded text relating to moderators in the annoucement: https://www.reddit.com/r/modnews/comments/1wubgvt/continuing...

It has been a godsend. The new design is bad in all the ways that most modern designs are bad: lots of needless padding, ads everywhere, poor information density. After they effectively killed third party apps, old.reddit.com has been the last bastion of a design intended for power users.

this is some smarmy shit:

> we'll stop supporting RSS feeds on November 13, 2026

3 sentences later:

> RSS has been a beloved part of the open web for a long time, and we’re grateful to everyone who used it to stay connected to Reddit.
