1632 by Eric Flint is an interesting exercise in alternative history. He extensively studied the real town of Mannington, West Virginia and used it as the basis of Grantville, a town that is transported from 2000 back in time to late 1631 in Thuringa, Germany during the 30 years war.

It was quite an engaging read, and lead to a series. You'll learn lots about the infrastructure of civilization along the way.
