Taking from people and enclosing it in a private, closed model for one's own profit is very different than taking from people and giving back to people.
One is morally bankrupt. The other is morally consistent.
If the weights are public, then benefits can't be privatized. IMO that offsets the ethics much better than whatever two-tier business model that OpenAI and Anthropic want to feed us.
