Ask HN: What self-hosted apps do you use daily?

I've been running a homelab for many years now and tried out many open source projects. A small percentage turn out to be real gems, but I use these almost every single day:

Shlink: URL shortener/redirects, alternative to Bitly

Vaultwarden: open source Bitwarden server

Dokploy: PaaS, alternative to Vercel / Netlify

Umami: gdpr-compliant web analytics

Immich: photo management

Papra: document archiving with OCR

Navidrome: personal music streaming

I'm super curious to hear about the apps you can't live without!

- Photo Together App: easily share and back up my family photos to my PC

- Stirling PDF: all-in-one PDF toolkit

- Memos: lightweight daily scratchpad & micro-notes

* Kavita: eBooks and Comics

* Jellyfin: Movies and TV Shows

* Seafile: Hosting my private files

* AdGuard Home: DNS/Ad blocking for all my devices

* Vaultwarden: Passwords

* Immich: For my photos

* Plausible: Analytics

* Audiobookshelf: Audiobooks

* Radarr/Sonarr/Prowlarr + Transmission

* Radicale: Calendar + Contacts

* HedgeDoc: For my Markdown files

LLMs made it REALLY easy to setup a self hosting server and maintaining it. I literally use all of these now daily.

I self-host RSS-Bridge and an RSS reader.

RSS can replace checking all your subscriptions (youtube, subreddits, etc.) to just one place. I tried a lot of RSS readers but it turns out you'll only like the one you make for yourself, that's why there are so many.

Sorting feeds into categories (I have channels for photography, sports, memes etc.) feels like bliss and is otherwise impossible to do.

You can also quickly vibe code RSS feeds for websites that don't have them.

I'm also running a Home Lab with several useful projects:

- Nextcloud (Cloud Storage alternative)

- Home Assistant (Awesome Smart Home Platform)

- Calibre-Web (Managing my eBooks)

I also run Umami but on a fly.io instance with all my other software that i build as a solo preneur.

Many of the apps I ended up not using was either because the projects were abandoned or because the web/app UX is just too bad or ugly. For instance I really like Photoprism but Immich has such a better app experience imo.

I recently discovered Arpeggi (client for my Navidrome server) and I have such a good time using it

Authelia, Immich, Jellyfin, Fusion, qBittorrent, Memos and Gitea. I think that's all of them.

I used Authelia in the past, I'm curious: why not using Cloudflare Access?

I don't really want to use Cloudflare anymore, and they have some restrictions that don't really work for me, e.g. 100MB max file upload size.

Authelia wasn't too difficult to set up and manage. I expose my services with a Caddy reverse proxy on a VPS, with Authelia in front, and so far it basically just works.

* PiHole - dns

* Jellyfin - videos and such

* mealie - recipes

* aphorio - my own app for container management, web servers, sockets, and more. It can do 5,000,000 messages person on a single socket roundtrip

* gamevault - like Jellyfin for games

* there is an audio app I wrote that I use daily

* ghost - blogging on my public web server

There are some others I run additionally but those listed above are the main ones

+1 for Pi-Hole FTP Server Webserver SyncTrayZor (between different devices) Wireguard VPN

pgweb: web ui for postgres

https://github.com/sosedoff/pgweb

Jellyfin, Lobserboard, AdGuard Home

One I built for myself is Marktwin.

Kimmi with whisper. Ngl running it on my old laptop is the only thing keeping my thing from breaking apart

actual budget: personal finance

vikunja: to-do list and task managemnet

Does Actual have forecasting, like for accounts balances

i don't know what is forecasting.

but actual budget can set starting balances and transactions, so it will show the real account balances... and it also support "scheduled transactions" for subscribed pays

Like can you see what an accounts balance is on any arbitrary future date with all its projected repeating and single transactions evaluated?

AFAIK, "actual" supports only repeating..., So it seems like it won't meet your expectations

If you can allocate your budget well and control your spending within it, forecasting savings will be somewhat easier.

I just started using it this year too, and there were a lot of expenses I had never experienced before. For now, for unexpected large expenses (like taxes), I’m preparing by splitting recurring annual ones into monthly savings
