I don't quite get the point of slowing down your drive toward a cliff... what's the strategy here? Is the goal to wait until another Congress comes along? Or are they planning to actually invest more in AI safety at the same time? Or are they just going to wait for society to do nothing and then blame society and speed back up?

I think you can see the Democrats all starting new committees and prepping bills and big AI is betting that Democrats will be in power soon. Too late IMO and won't make a difference.

Always wondered what Skynet would have done had it killed off the humans in the Terminator future. Would it build a machine society?

There are some acceelerationists who want "superior" machines to replace humanity. But what if instead they get the equivalent of a paper clipping gray goo, or a bored Skynet who just fights it's own creations? Is that worth replacing all the humans?

As a thought experiment, what is a p doom AI doing after humanity is gone?

There are many insect/bird/mammal species that exhibit reliably predictable behaviors. It will co-opt them.
