100% getting ready to try and get congress to build them a regulatory moat. They were hoping those headline-incidents they staged would prompt a congressional hearing but our government is too inept right now to know its head from its ass much less do anything about AI

Sam: OK, Dario, you win. We're pacing the frontier. This is what you wanted.

Dario: All right, frontier is paced! From now on, AI moves forward at a rate WE decide!

[Kwindla Kramer bursts into the apartment]

Kramer: You guys might want to sit down for this. You know that Chinese place down on 4th? They got a model that's smoking you guys at SWE benchmarks!

[laughter, applause, slap bass intensifies]

Never heard of verified slowdown?

Verifiable slowdown doesn't help you much if there are parties (like Chinese frontier labs) who didn't agree to the slowdown.

Verified slowdown includes Chinese labs.

Says who? You? Because the Chinese have other ideas...

Are there any US-China talks going on here? Not much good if Deepseek decides to overtake them. China would surely be willing to negotiate considering that they’re not immune to AI damage.

Or, get this, LLMs are sigmoidal and theyre all in the burn cash for fuckall progress.

Qwen3.8 is basically doing more with less and openai and anthropic built the equivelent of the American culture: all fat, little depth.

Xi is supposed to visit the White House soon and there are supposed to be AI talks.

They're not obligated to do anything.

It’s not about whether they’re obligated, it’s whether they have something to lose by not making a deal. It worked with CFCs.

As I think they are already regulating things, unlike in US, oligarchs cannot control the govt in China. They crackdown the rich, before it is too late. ex: Jack Ma[1]

“Our competitors are our friends. Our customers are the enemy."

This great quote was brought to us by executives in the 90s at Archer Daniel Midland, an agricultural company.

That’s what comes to mind as I hear about the AI companies talk about pacing themselves.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, they want to reduce the risk of powerful AI doing bad things.

Reminds me of when the colleges went sat free. Pacing human intelligence at the high school level.

book pitch:

On being sane in insane places: A tale from inside the marketing department of a frontier AI Lab.

Tacit collusion.

We meet again my friend!

Thank god they've grown up and stop acting like dicks.

I’m not nearly that generous with my opinion.

An alternate read is that the entrenched leaders want to slow down development of competitors.

If Dario or Sam A wants to slow down frontier model development because they believe there is an existential threat, they already have the power to do that single handedly.

If I discovered that I had accidentally invented a doomsday machine, I wouldn’t be furiously providing access to anyone with a credit card.
