Ifconfig is still part of Unix parlance, so I think you're doing the right thing by covering it, however I'd lead with the current tools, and then show ifconfig later, to prevent newcomers from unexpected surprises later on.
It would be really nice if there were an easy way for the reader to correct typos. Emailing the author or posting such things to the comments section is just so much more clumsy than it could be.
# yes die > /dev/mem
:-)
When I was younger my friends and I would find cool and interesting ways to crash unix boxes.
A more modern version:
dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/mem
* cat 'ing /dev/urandom into /dev/dsp (white noise), or /dev/fb0 (noise on the display)
* cat 'ing your /dev/mic into someone else's /dev/dsp via a SSH connection
* Playing around with /dev/mem or /dev/kmem (the right sequence of commands.. something involving `strings` and `dd` lets you actually see your bios stuff)
its as they say: "you either get it or you don't, there is no easy or hard"
Why?
