How does the terminal replace a networked media player?

By using a bunch of CLI tools and self-written scripts.

I don't use streaming (though, mpv can likely handle it). Prefer to have all media I use locally. Don't watch video on my phone, either.

OK, I understand now; you mean Jellyfin is only used by your family, because you prefer to use the CLI instead. I didn't parse it that way initially.

mpv can still do terminal ANSI-art output if you really want but it can also display pixels directly via DRM without a display server if you launch it from a random VT.
