I'm totally with you. The proliferation of AI, to me, is a collective choice of convenience over climate. Remember Covid? We can do something, we just won't.
Do we even want to? AI is in many ways amazing. We should obviously not be powering these data centres with gas, but... that's hardly unique to data centres. America voted for Trump well before AI used any power.
The general population didn't exactly get a choice. AI is forced on us in many apps we were already using, solely because CxOs believe any mention of AI results in Line Goes Up.
The population didn't choose for convenience. The billionaires chose for additional profit.
AI has quite a lot to do with current policy. I thought we were going to have carbon emissions peak with electric cars and the like and now suddenly everyone wants to build tens of GW of data centers powered by gas turbines. Although I'm not anti AI, I could back limiting data center build out to available green energy.
But we can blame AI for making it much worse in 5 years instead of making it less bad as everyone agreed to ~10 years ago (until an idiot ascended the throne)
Yea but I bet if you still had beavers in Europe you'd still have water.
Uhm, no.
We do still have beavers.
Funny. We have beavers in the Lobau in Vienna. But it's still dry. And yet we want to build a highway tunnel through it. Guess we just need more beavers. It's famous for it's naturism anyway.
The conservation status of the Eurasian Beaver is "least concern" and the population is increasing. Their distribution doesn't cover all of Europe, but there's certainly no shortage of them.
AI is another symptom, adding up with everything thats wrong.
