Empty comments can be ok if they're positive. There's nothing wrong with submitting a comment saying just "Thanks." What we especially discourage are comments that are empty and negative—comments that are mere name-calling.
It's not that what you said was wrong, it's just that the global optimum is best served by letting good feelings be shared, even when there isn't much cognitive content. Basically, HN does fine when cortex and heart are in approximately equal balance.
