seems like the beaten to death shit jokes like all reddit posts

  sudo echo "127.0.0.1 www.reddit.com" >> /etc/hosts

If this is a glass house joke well done.

Reddit is way worse. At least we pretend to be here for tech discussions, even if we can’t help but get baited by politics most of the time.

dangs moderation here is pretty good and I think that helps.

This is honestly the command I ran

Mmm. Unless your /etc/hosts is wide open or your shell is running as root, you got something like

  -bash: /etc/hosts: Permission denied

because the way to do what you intended is to sudo 'tee' or something similar in function. AFAIK, you can't 'sudo' shell redirection.

Yeah I actually ran it as root without the sudo then edited in the sudo, other comment with tee was correct

Root shell is the way to go. sudo is a crutch.

So, it was honestly not the command you ran.

The write by your shell through the redirect won't get those elevated privileges. You need to use something like tee:

    echo "127.0.0.1 www.reddit.com" | sudo tee -a /etc/hosts

the sudo -s above it is implied.
