The insufferable hypocrisy of elite academia

With how many stories I've seen (not just this article) about <fuzzy> performative ideological institutional reactive moral panics </fuzzy> in academia in the past half-ish century, it seems bizarre that no Sociological terminology, nor theories, nor analogous situations (outside modern academia) seem to come up.
Perhaps I'm just not reading the right sources.
Perhaps Sociology is pretend science, has nothing meaningful to offer, and all the real grown-ups know that - "notice how we don't mention Santa Claus stuff either, kid?".
Perhaps sociologists understand things perfectly well - but also understand that speaking out against witch burning would - no matter their tenure and expertise - result in their own careers being burned at the stake. So outside of their secret "Sociologists only" meanings, they parrot whatever their university is currently proclaiming on such matters.
Might anyone familiar be feeling charitable, to enlighten me?
The author or his opponents?
this type of perfomative "woke" behavior and language policing only exists because it lets humanities students from rich families recognize each other. you dont fix it by getting rid of DEI or anti racism but by removing elitism from schools.
i dont know how to fix this. reducing costs, randomized admissions, sending the best teachers to lower ranked schools, maybe set up a matching program like they use for medical residencies. all of these would probably work to equalize things a little bit but it might not be enough to change the culture to the point elite colleges dont matter.
any ideas?
