There's much more overlap than you'd think. Quants generally have a STEM background, and stay in the field much for the same sort of reasons tech workers stick around building torment nexuses for FAANG.

Aren’t quants and what you would usually refer to as “investment bankers” pretty different groups of people?

Absolutely. The quants have legitimate skills. The ibs mostly just got lucky with the big internship junior year that set themselves up for life.

They didn’t get lucky except to the extent they were born into a fourth generation Ivy League family.
