Kobo is already by far the best e-reader brand and things like this just cement it further.

It is the only mainstream e-reader I'm aware of where you can simply change a single line of configuration and make it sync with your own server instead of Kobo's while keeping all of the stock software exactly the same. There are even server implementations that proxy to Kobo's server if you want to sync some books from your own server and some from Kobo's.

Other options either make it impossible to sync from your own server or require you to install different apps like KOReader, which though powerful is a really janky experience compared to the stock app (and of course you can use KOReader on Kobo if you want to).

K what I actually had no clue about the "single config line change to sync from my own server", that's awesome. I have a Clara BW and I really like it. Super affordable (got it on sale too) and "it just works".

This looks cool, and I might use it to make use of my Clara BW (which I bought to read on and realised I liked actual books a lot more)

About the readme though: the AI-generated text is perfectly serviceable, but definitely generated with more recent LLMs (I think this one would be Claude Opus 5 from feel). There’s so much unnecessary detail about what things are “real”, and what they do “so that”. I feel like with recent Claude versions, it’s like the thinking/internal representation is leaking out into the output. It feels unpolished and unintelligent

Cool, looks like it's not just a collection of apps but an sdk for building your own too

btw you can install "a whole postmarketos" on some kobos

I have tried to do this, but most newer Kobo cannot due to CPU architecture support limitations. https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Kobo_Clara_BW

The older ones which do are severely restricted in features, and often end up with several issues. Have you tried it personally?
