What if we learned languages like we acquired our first?

When we learn our mother tongue-language, we don't use dictionaries. We learn words in context, tied to an object, a situation, or a feeling. Memory relies heavily on these rich associations, but most language tools strip all of that away. This is something that frustrated me personally when i wanted to learn english and get better at it, so I built "Nattly" to help me learn English the same way native english speakers acquire it.

Instead of isolated lists, Nattly ties vocabulary to specific scenarios and images, backed by spaced repetition. The goal is to practice recall based on context rather than just recognizing direct translations.

Direct retrieval vs Recognition:

The exposure gap is staggering. Children of native spaeker parents get thousands of hours of language exposure before they can speak, while adult learners may get just 15–30 hours a year.

So I built a *Radio* feature in Nattly that generates everyday scenarios: The narrator plays the role of an image depiction of the scene taking place and occasionally explains difficult words directly in L2, helping learners build direct L2 associations rather than constantly translating through their native language L1. Over time, this exposure will strengthen pathways for direct retrieval in L2.

I'd love to hear your feedback on "Nattly". Do you find words easier to remember when attached to a story or situation?

I agree with you that you can learn a language better by getting exposed to it. But you need to at least know the foundation of that language, like grammar or how to build a sentence in that language. But I think watching something along with subtitles is better than just blindly hearing it, at least you need to know the meaning of that sentence. For example, watching movies, shows or YouTube videos with subtitles in a languages you understand.

But that alone is not enough to fully understand that language. Because you will be a passive speaker, where you understand what they are talking about, but you can't answer or build the sentence on your own. For this, you would need to exercise your ability to build sentences, such as speaking in that language or writing something like a post, comment, or blog in that language.

That's just my opinion, as someone who learned 3 foreign languages.

Thanks for the response, I agree that exposure cannot be a replacement for grammar or active production — but it's about filling the input gap: children spend hundreds and eventually thousands of hours hearing language before they can construct sentences themselves.

the idea of the radio feature of "Nattly" is to give L2 learners more of that background exposure. The narrator can make the situation vivid and explain difficult words directly in L2. I agree it won't replace actual visual context — the comics and visual flashcards features are there for that.

Is this like ALG, or different?

Thanks for sharing the article!

When we were children, we could ask anyone what a word meant without hesitation. I think this is a big difference when learning a second language.

English is my second language, and when I watch a movie or read a book, I often struggle with words I don’t know.

Yes you're right, but even as babies, we were constantly exposed to our L1 in context. We saw things, touched them, felt them, and experienced them — those vivid experiences helped create strong associations that made words easier to recognise and retrieve naturally later.

Nattly is similar to a children’s book for learning L1. The colorful illustrations help me remember the words.

I couldn’t find the Radio feature. Do you mean the “Play Whole Scene” button?

Very interesting, thank you for sharing!
