Projected Lifetime Cancer Risks from Current CT Scans

Interview with Dr. Rebecca Smith-Bindman of UCSF regarding her study on the link between CT scans and the risk of developing cancer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X80oNlM51R0

The study estimates that the 93 million CT scans performed in 2023 in the US could result in approximately 103,000 future cancer cases.

An estimated 61,510,000 patients underwent 93,000,000 Computed tomography (CT) examinations in 2023 [...].

This study found that at current utilization and radiation dose levels, CT examinations in 2023 were projected to result in approximately 103,000 future cancers over the course of the lifetime of exposed patients.

If current practices persist, CT-associated cancer could eventually account for 5% of all new cancer diagnoses annually.
