China's Xi Jinping launches new AI alliance, WAICO

World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organisation (WAICO) is a coalition of 29 nations

> Its stated goals are to promote international cooperation and develop AI regulation across countries that ensure the technology is beneficial and safe for humans.

Besides aiming to create global standards related to AI, it will also try to expand AI access to poorer countries and subsidize open source AI research projects at universities around the world.

Also from Reuters:

> The speech pitched China's AI coalition as a rival to the U.S.-led "Pax Silica" international initiative to secure global AI and critical mineral supply chains, though Xi avoided naming Washington.
