There Is No Sound of the 2020s. Yet

I remember Ted Giola going on Tyler Cowen's pod and making similar points, namely: (1) formula is the enemy (2) tech has flattened music taste (3) economic incentives of ticketers, streaming platforms are not in line with preservation of the art's health

Where Ted would disagree with the author would be in their assumption of correlation between economic precarity and enigmatic music creation. Blues and Jazz emerged from conditions of poverty

I'm still in the middle of this article, but already have many thoughts...

Growing older, it is hard to tell if music is stationary, or if I am just growing old and out of touch. Trends in popular music often originate in some of the more experimental niches, especially electronic. So it is very interesting to hear the experience and opinion of those immersed in this world.

Also this is a very well written and captivating piece. The originality should be appreciated.

Personally, I consider Ethel Cain’s American Teenager (2022) to be the most definitively “2020s sound” yet, but that’s probably just an elder millennial who doesn’t get modern culture’s ignorant hot take.
