Classic Video Poker (CVP) is a lightweight, browser-based retro video poker game which originally hit the front page of HN on Oct 4, 2023: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37763098

I've finally managed to release version 2. The delay was mostly due to fear of upsetting the user base with breaking changes.

Version 2 includes:

- Frictionless accounts: added registration so you can save progress but no personal info or email.

- Deep play stats: Track lifetime RTP (Return to player), max win/loss streaks, winning hand counts and more.

- Leaderboards & Cash out: Cash out wins above the free play level, feeding into leaderboards for bank balance, RTP% (after 50 hands of play), and leaderboards that reward grinders

- Mobile stability - I've completely rewritten the communications routines both on server/client side. Mobile can be flaky, so the client handles silent auto-retries in the background without interrupting gameplay.

- Updated UI: New crisp graphics for playing cards

Obligatory tech stack info: serverside PHP / MySQL & client is coded in Godot 3.5.

I'd love to hear your feedback & I hope you all enjoy the new version!

Wow, this is impressive, everything is so realistic, it feels like I'm not in a browser but in a dark room with a PC where this game is running, I really liked it, it looks very nostalgic.

Thanks so much Denis! Best of luck ;-)

Nice job. I noticed that the sound effects are only playing out of my left speaker though.

Thanks for pointing out the audio problem... I just fixed it. I've only got a single Ikea speaker on my desk, reminds me I should get another one of these days! Cheers!

Sure! The interlacing CRT effect is a nice touch BTW. I held off touching Godot for a long time because I had heard that its WASM/WebGL/etc. support could be a bit spotty but your game looks great so I'm thinking I should give it another shot!

If you're targeting WASM etc., I would personally stick with 3.5 for the moment - it's rock solid. I've tried porting to 4 a few times and it's flaky; notably with increased build size, and other issues I don't recall right now.

FWLIW: as an native-born Las Vegan, i approve! :-D

This brings back some early-1990s nostalgia.

I'm so glad you approve! Recently I was reading "The Doctrine of Chances" by Steward Ethier that RTP is actually 99.54% if you follow the strategy in the book - which likely explains why Jacks or Better is apparently rare on the floor these days... but I wonder - is it rare in Vegas?

> but I wonder - is it rare in Vegas?

If you're asking me, i can't say: we left Vegas in 1982 and i've not been there since 1997. If not aimed specifically at me... i also can't say. Either way, can't say.
