One major difference is that hackathons are team efforts where writing a novel is generally a solo endeavor. The biggest hurdle is keeping an ad-hoc team together for a month.
At the same time, I think a month is enough time to get a basic app built on your own. That's why it made sense to do it for an entire month - while it's not easy, it's still a challenge.
