It’s unclear if the article is talking about a hosted service or something ‘self hostable’.

> Employees working on it have considered making the code repository available for purchase to OpenAI's customer base.

This makes it sound like the ‘product’ is a self hostable git web interface/forge(like Gitea, ForgeJo etc), which would be interesting.

Once you get addicted to people just … literally typing in data to you all day …

You know what I mean? Galactus.

As the service provides a GitHub alternative to be packed with data likely generated by LLMs, a fitting name would be:

slop bucket.

Bucket's too nice a vessel, I've seen some decorative buckets that look kinda neat.

Slop Trough? Slop Pit?

Push your commit to the team's Slop Hole?

trough is perfect alone

But does Omegastar finally support ISO timestamps?

Great stuff. My local coyotes are also offering chicken coop services free of charge.

It would be great to have more serious, corporate-backed, centralized competitors to GitHub. The latter's lack of reliability lately is getting disrespectful for their users.

Have you noticed most of the big LLM do not have direct access to GitHub? You have to download the repo and give it to the LLM to process.

OpenAI knows there’s nothing more important to AI than that giant pile of code.

The founders of GitHub -whatever they got - left 99% of the money on the table.

> The founders of GitHub -whatever they got - left 99% of the money on the table.

They weren’t visionaries then? They bailed out way before anyone imagined this AI mania.

OpenAI is Microsoft

I hate how it doesn’t even mention git in the article. That being said, they have a boatload of money. It would be so much h quicker to acquire someone like Gitlab and slap an OpenAI theme on it.

Please don't give them any ideas. The last thing we need is to be pressured to select from 1) GitHub from Microslop, 2) Gitlab with that AI sticker, 3) Self-hosted pain.

Please don't. GitLab is one of the few good services out there. Don't sacrifice it at the altar of the AI cargo cult.

It can purchase my gitbusiness.com
