This is why. Every time I launch MySQL client:

Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g. Your MySQL connection id is 1024604 Server version: 5.1.63-0ubuntu0.10.04.1-log (Ubuntu)

If you're sick of seeing that message, MariaDB is a non-Oracle fork of MySQL, and I hear good things about it.

Percona Server http://www.percona.com/software/percona-server and Drizzle http://www.drizzle.org/ are suitable replacements as well.

I don't get it...

All the Oracle stuff.

I think he's saying that Oracle's aggressive branding of MySQL (and other Sun products) has alienated some people.

Why does that matter, when Oracle already powers Salesforce?

Right. I don't agree with the OP, I just think that's what he was saying. Salesforce doesn't seem like someone to be put off by aggressive anything.

You mean the copyright notice? It was there before Oracle acquired Sun.

Pretty it sure it isn't the branding that's the problem, it's the brand. Oracle is no friend of open source software projects.

What's the significance of this? Will Oracle shut down MySQL developement?

Oracle and Salesforce (or at least Larry Ellison and Mark Benioff) are huge rivals. Anything Mark can do to fuck over Oracle is a plus in Salesforce's book. So moving all of Salesforce off Oracle DB technology (Orcale + MySQL) would be a huge middle finger to them.
