The idea of reducing wiring in a DC seems nice but the argument for latency and power usage seems weird.

Getting faster than a fiber link is likely very hard. Bandwidth might be an interesting angle but also probably comes with some constraints on signal integrity. At the same time, optimizing power usage is always nice but the networking power consumption already seems to be (in the context of the whole system) rather low.
