I think that's a regional thing, in the US I believe they call burgers sandwiches but in the UK it would sound very strange.
And a pizza a pie!
And synthetic-goop opaque industrial squeeze-bottle sauces 'vinaigrette'!
Maybe regional in the US even? We may classify burgers as 'technically a type of sandwich', but nobody would ever refer to a burger as a sandwich by name.
