I've found that I'm not so good at anticipating how my work will be used, so I tend to "pave the bare spots"[0].

But it is worth noting that this can have trouble scaling in a complex enough environment and can be more expensive in the long run.
I’m not a huge fan of the CMMI, but Level 5 prescribes pretty much exactly that, though applied to the production process, as opposed to the end product.
Anyone can walk through a minefield, as long as they're patient, and don't mind walking past a lot of body parts.
