Gitpod is now Ona, moving beyond the IDE

How was I able to guess just from the headline that it was going to be an AI play with a VSCode fork.

Their copy sounds so generic like it was written by an LLM. They should run their whole business autonomously.

> Launching the mission control for your personal team of autonomous SWE agents.

> IDEs defined the last era. Agents define the next. As the work of programming moves from typing to product taste, decision making, and review, everything about how we create software changes. To thrive in the next decades, engineers will have to move beyond the IDE. And they deserve a power tool that makes that shift natural and exciting.

> That's why we're re-founding the company as Ona: the mission control for your personal team of software engineering agents working across the entire software development lifecycle. Ona is sandboxed for high-autonomy, runs full VS Code in the browser and also works on your phone.

Everyone sees AI as this huge, game-changing technology that’s going to reshape every life as we know it, but right now its main money-making uses are pretty much content and code generation. So it’s no surprise that more players are jumping in. With what Gitpod already offers, it totally makes sense for them to go down this route.

Computer is just a fancy calculator after all.

I don't think they're offering a VSCode fork, esp when the copy you pasted says 'move beyond the IDE'.

Seems more like an agent layer on top of their existing CDE product. Which is a bit different than a cursor/windsurf/etc clone.

RIP to Gitpod, once a great Remote Development Environment, now a generic AI agent.

Couldn't this have been a separate product?
