Main point missing from the title - said government official was then released for unspecified reasons and is now in Israel.

Have to wonder why he was even allowed to flee the country in the first place. They didn’t gank his passport?

If he did something which hurt the government he wouldn't get away.

Do you mean he will not escape this crime (if guilty), or that if it was a crime the government cared more about that he would not have been allowed to return to Israel?

I read it as the latter fwiw.

There's a story of the Saudi embassy in the US (correction: it was the Canada-based embassy of this "great" nation) issuing fake identities to suspects of crime (sexual assault) to allow them to flee. A quick search of "saudi arabian rapist fake passport" gives me a lot of hits that Jeffrey Epstein also had a Saudi Arabian passport... huh.

But since the Israelis are noble and are the only free democracy of that region, I can't imagine they would do something like that... /S

There was no need for fake passports in this case. He was just allowed to return to Israel. It's unclear whether this is because of the individual or whether accused paedophiles are regularly allowed to leave the country.
