If some independent person owns it might be more profitable to create a https://signup.netflix.com/Affiliates landing page than to redirect to blockbuster

Might we amend the headline slightly to clarify this is not the real Netflix.com domain at stake? I should have re-read the headline, but my detail-fu is always off at the end of the day and I just spent an hour thinking somebody at Netflix was going to get fired because they let the real domain name lapse. :)

I've noticed that a lot of sites I visit (facebook, etc.) redirect to the wrong site. I think this is a DNS issue... and even though I change to 8.8.8.8, the problem still persists...

Sounds like your DNS requests are being intercepted at the network level. Probably an infected router, but it could also be an evil ISP.

If it happens even when you're on (for example) public wifi, then it's malware on your own computer.

Yeah, it's weird. I'm on a Mac, and use my own Wifi. I suspect it's my ISP's DNS... but never really bothered to followup.

It's funny because sometimes if I go to facebook.com, it pops up with an SSL error - saying the site certificate belongs to another domain (eg: nonfacebook.com). Usually a reboot fixes it.

it sounds like a trojan or other piece of malware. DNSChanger variants for OSX exist and might not have been affected by the FBI's efforts to shut down DNSChanger itself, though it could just as easily be some other malware.

You shouldn't take this lightly, and definitely shouldn't bank online or otherwise do anything that should require any kind of security until you resolve this.

I don't see how this is any different from people squatting on domains like "faebook.com", who later had to turn them over after legal action was taken.

Well, as was pointed out in another comment, it looks like a random domain squatter. The reason that the squatter has it pointing to Blockbuster is that they are probably interested in selling the domain to Netflix, and having it point to a competitor would theoretically inflict enough pain to make them want to buy it. Or, to make Blockbuster buy the domain, so they could remove the redirect (after all, it makes them look like bad guys).
