Isn't that what MariaDB is for?

Yes, Drizzle and MariaDB are two MySQL forks that are gaining good momentum. Let hope another OpenOffice -> LibreOffice move can be done again.

MariaDB is by Monty, creator of MySQL who previously sold-then-forked it. So there's no guarantee the same thing won't happen to it (quite the opposite really).

He does no longer own the exclusive rights to the code (they are Oracle's now) and so can only publish under the GPL.

An honest question, why support the people who caused this situation in the first place? It really seems like supporting other groups would be more appropriate.

Postgres is an extremely high quality piece of software.

I think you misunderstood me. It wasn't a good analogy, though.

They were proposing an alternative when I want a fork of what I already use.

I cut a bunch of apps (and their large databases) over from MySQL to Postgres several years ago. It was tedious, but I've never had cause to regret it in any way.

When MySQL became Oracle I was very relieved to not have to think about the implications.

Well, personally, my favourite database is SQLite.

I don't build large apps, although for many-read-few-write-type sites SQLite isn't so bad.

SQLite is awesome too. I use it whenever I can.

I personally like its simplicity, like the fact it's a single file and no messy authentication to deal with, and the simple data type set.

And also the docs are much more readable to me than for MySQL.
