Ask HN: Resume Video

8 points·tsally··6 comments

I'll be attending a corperate event in a few weeks and I have been asked to make a 2-3 minute video about myself. Does anyone have any experience with this? What works and what doesn't? If you were looking for employees, what would you like to see in a video about a canidate? Would you film the video someplace interesting, or just keep it standard and professional?

Cheers,

Tim

Just don't do what Aleksey Vayner did: http://www.veoh.com/videos/e1336748NgyMqyG

Wow, I didn't realize it was possible to make yourself unemployable for the rest of your life

I'd just be natural and to the point, don't brag and keep the jargon to a minimum. Don't forget what happened with this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impossible_is_Nothing_(video_r%...

And in an excellent parody of that, Michael Cera gives a good example of what not to do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAV0sxwx9rY

Creating a video can require significantly more effort than you'd think and the results will probably appear amateurish, even if you've a ridiculous amount of time and budget to call upon (see Vayner).

Your best option would be to focus on how you present yourself in writing (watch that spelling!) and (if you have cash to spend) purchase some appropriate clothing you feel good in instead.

When deciding on how formal to make it, just ask yourself: Is this the sort of video that would be appreciated by the sort of company I want to work for?
