Spaceballs 2 Will See Rick Moranis Return as Dark Helmet

The 8th and 9th Star Wars movies were such a mess. What if space balls 2 parodied these movies, but ended up with a more coherent plot?

Reminds me of the episode of 30 Rock where, in an effort to get back at Weird Al for satirizing her song, Jenna makes a song that's too silly to parody. So Weird Al makes an authentic version out of the silly song in a de-parody.

The new Star Wars mess makes it trivial to do a better job than the originals. It's been done before - recent (to me, because I watched Too Gun 1 to prepare for 2) example: Hot Shots has some clever humor, Top Gun is really a pretty dumb movie.

(Top Gun 2 is like a juvenile action flick for adult sensibilities - if that sounds good, you can watch it. It's a quality effort in many aspects.)

What I thought was funny about Top Gun 2 that the site they attack is pretty much based on the uranium enrichment site at Natanz in Iran. But in real life this was not attacked by hotshot pilots but by a computer virus. Pretty telling how it lives in the past. But yeah it's a movie of course and top gun 1 wasn't intelligent either as you say.

In true life imitates art you might still witness Natanz being bombed in the coming weeks.

you have great foresight.

I thought Iran for sure due to the planes they had on hand. But the enemy is never named in the movies.

I always found that odd. At war, with a nameless enemy. Perhaps apt in a way.

The Orville was a better Trek than some of the new series, after all.

The Orville came right on the back of Discovery being the mess that it was. And it really did hit the spot!

Juat realiaing I probably wont enjoy the movie so much as I stopped following Star Wars after Phantom Menace.

If it's not called "Space Balls 2: The search for more money" I riot

Disagree. They already did that joke. It should be Spaceballs 3: The search for Spaceballs 2

Well, Al Lowe already did that one too.

They already didn't call History of the World Part Two "Jews in Space," so it would be on-theme.

Will you accept The Schwartz Awakens with a bit where Mr. VCR shows us the alternate timeline of The Search For More Money?

They should definitely do a Disney and rehash the original plot to Spaceballs. Megamaid is now Gigamaid and somehow President Skroob returned.

It would be hilarious if they show Dark Helmet building droids in his infancy.

Spaceballs included a send-up of the craven merchandising of Star Wars etc, so the fact they are doing this is on point.

Surprised they aren’t using the tagline announced in the first movie: “Spaceballs 2: The search for more money.”

This really needs to be the title

Love to see a sequel to Hardware Wars.

You revived memories I didn't know I had.

The announcement video is pretty funny in the classic Mel Brooks style

This news really made my day, both for being spaceballs and the return of Rick Moranis

He's 72 years young! He should revisit a bunch of his classics like Honey I Shrunk the Kids.

Honey, I shrunk the Grandkids.

Mel Brooks is 98, I hope he lives long enough to enjoy this movie.

He looked and sounded pretty good for 98!

But will he do his own stunts?

Given the reference to Space Balls in the Tesla Plaid trim, I wonder if there will be any acknowledgment as an easter egg.

Why would Mel Brooks want to acknowledge that Nazi? He already did The Producers back in 1967

I'd pay to hear "Springtime, for Elon, ..."

Although to be perfectly candid, I'm unsure that he meant that gesture as a Nazi salute. I dislike him for a bunch of other reasons about which I'm more certain.

I'm 90 percent sure he meant it ironically, or at least in an attempt to be a stupid edgelord. But it was still an unacceptable enough asshole thing to do that he deserves every bit of blowback he's gotten. Like trying to call a black person the N-word "ironically," no, you don't get a pass. You're just a different flavor of "bad person."

Everything the guy comes out with strikes me as "14 year old doing and saying edgy things to try to look cool to the upperclassmen."

The flamethrower was the first thing that gave me pause.

My moment was the Teslaquila.

Tres Comas

also his wielding of the chainsaw with that wimpy yelp

If it were me I'd probably follow it up with "I meant it ironically" rather than complain about the left trying to cancel me.

Considering his support of far right German parties around the same time, it seems far more likely he was doing it to curry favour like he’s tried to do with Trump

See "stupid edgelord."

How is currying favor and badly attempting to dogwhile (turned out to be a full blown whistle that people somehow still didn't hear) being an edgelord? Being an edgelord is saying something 'wrong' to try to be badass. Elon is funding and supporting far right parties to try to enrich himself. These things are not the same lol

He's also retweeted Holocaust deniers. Could be a coincidence but that's would be enough for Elon to tweet "Someone should look into this".

Yeah, any single incident could be waived as just being an edgelord. But there are many.

Given his immediate actions the next day were to make a bunch of puns about how he "did Nazi the backlash coming" on twitter? It's much harder to give him the benefit of the doubt

He wouldn't, and you know exactly why he would still acknowledge Elon.

And Ludicrous Mode. And The Boring Company (Not A) Flamethrower.

Truly a new breakthrough in home video marketing.

“Somehow, Dark Helmet has returned.”

"And change the combination on my luggage!"

Now if they could get Tim Russ back.

Oh yeah I forgot he was in it. It's hard to recognize him. Especially without the ears lol.

They combed the desert to find him, but ain't found shit.

Just... sigh

"Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money" was a joke, until it wasn't. I'm happy to see Mel Brooks being his mercenary self only a step from the grave, but he could probably do better than retreads of old IP. Maybe make fun of the Marvel movies instead?

To lampoon the culture, you need to partake in it first. I doubt any 98 year old is doing that to any relevant degree, even if they are still as sharp as a tack. He might have feelings about Ken Jennings as jeopardy host but that might be about it.

If you’d have read the articles you’d know that Mel is not writing or directing. This is the same director that did Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar.

Why are you telling me this and not OP?

Far too many movies are lampooning culture these days by adding TikTok or YouTube references (either as memes or directly as a short/"TikTok view"). It's horrible IMO and I think it's going to age very poorly.

I'm not keeping my hopes up, but I'll reserve judgement until I see it. If it's just "Spaceballs 2: More Spaceballs", then I'll join you in the sentiment. But if it proves to be "Spaceballs 2: Schooling Deadpool in how to Parody the Modern Franchise Blockbuster", then I'll gladly champion it.

This seems pretty unfair.

Rick Moranis is coming out of a 40 year retirement for this movie. So its hard to level the money grabber on him.

John Candy sadly can't come back for this.

It seems more likely that they found a script they like finally and the cast considers this to be a fun project for them to do.

They said that about Indiana Jones 4, and it kinda sucked.

From 4 onwards all totally sucked, but it was in part because the first three set the bar too high, and the Last Crusade in particular was such a great closure.

What about Bill Pullman and Daphne Zuniga though? They'd be nice to see too. I think I've last seen Pullman in independence day.

pullman’s son is in it.

Cgi Leia opportunity here.

That's a good point, where's the Spaceballs of Marvel? Lord knows they deserve it!

Comic books don't have the greatest writing, I'd argue that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is huge enough to be its own parody, specially with sagas where comedy is over the top, like Guardians of The Galaxy or Thor.

Howard the Duck?

There is no way this does not take a dig at MCU.

History of the World Part 3 sucked, hopefully this one doesn't...

Well, you sound like fun...

Spaceballs was criticised at the time of release for being too late and no longer being relevant.

I liked The Producers.
