That's a whole new view of Jane Jacobs! You should post this as a submission to HN sometime (maybe in a few weeks, after which it won't seem like a follow-up to this thread). Many issues here, as in a lot of SSC stuff, I'll pick one for fun

Prices didn't use to change persistently upward! That's an industrial revolution time. Stagflation is pretty well and conventionally understood by monetary econ at this point.
