I remember in 2011 working for a startup that made sure to pay the intern minimum wage to avoid any lawsuits. It's tricky to make sure they are getting "school credit" for the work. Without that you can get sued for sure.
Unpaid internships are mostly legal in the US under the FLSA as long as there is a clear expectation of no compensation, educational value, limited duration and no displacement of paid employees. When high school students are practically willing to work for free for and early stage founders could use that driven, ambitious talent, Modern Slavery Corp is a win-win for all!
are you keeping the name? bold choice
Unpaid internships are a powerful win-win for young talent and early-stage companies. For high school students with no experience, they provide a launchpad to gain practical skills, build confidence, and explore career paths through hands-on roles. Startups and small businesses can access enthusiastic, fresh-thinking interns who bring energy and new ideas without financial strain. It’s the kind of deal that makes everyone wonder why we didn’t think of this sooner.
If this is not satire you really need to take the name back to the drawing board...
You never know. American racial polemics are going through internal reconsideration, and desperation for competitive domestic labor is ramping up. Nominal incongruity never stopped OpenAI from recognizing commercial success, perhaps it won't stop ModernSlavery either.
