Shipping animals isn't transporting them using some specialized service; it's litterally sending them through the mail system like any other parcel, the same system that regularly damages heavily padded packages. The practice is still common today, especially for live chicks, and many animals die due to the conditions of transport. Their deaths are treated as an expected loss.
