Does suggest these things creep into the public consciousness broadly at a slower rate than such a switch can be executed and thus has a high chance of success.

I'm surprised that a lot of people still don't understand what's going on. They think it's just politics as normal. Either too many people want a strong man to take over and don't care about the rule of law or democracy, or they're not paying attention.
And they don’t know history. The horrors of WW2 is something we should not repeat. The rule of law is where your rights come from. No law, no rights. No matter your political belief, you should draw the line here.
