Is the smart link card still working in NYC and PATH?

This cost a one time purchase of $5 and then the refill with either trips or money. That was working better than metrocard.

edit: PATH is from Newark Airport,NJ to 34th Street Penn Station, Manhattan.

How is a magstripe system $20 Million a year more expensive to operate than an NFC system? The electronics themselves cost about the same to make. Is this matter of escaping vendor lock-in?

The article states that’s the cost to keep running MetroCard in parallel, not that MetroCard costs more to run than OMNY.
