This is an extremely dangerous design.

Good luck finding those handles in a panic in a smoke-filled vehicle cabin, especially if you don't know they exist.

Bonus points if you can do it with post-collision shock or concussion, drunk on alcohol, high on drugs, or with a combination of these impairments.

Well, since the US Executive Branch is gutting[0] the regulator in question, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), I wouldn't hold my breath.

Does not say whether the occupants inside were conscious and trying to unlock the doors to escape? Because a locked car door is a locked car door, doesn't really matter what brand of car it is.

I'm sure Elon Musk is going to lose sleep over this. /s

The doors should have opened, but they should also not have all been on drugs. Either would have prevented this. I'm not saying one is more important than the other.
