Trump says he's buying a Tesla to support Musk and counter 'illegal' boycott

cnbc.com

Nice senseless phrasing, but there is no consumer boycott that is illegal.

...yet.

Not quite, there's a long history of legislation about consumer boycotts of Israeli products.

38 out of 50 states have laws on their books prohibiting Israeli product boycott and some form or another.

In the most egregious cases, these do things like fire School teachers if they are choosing to avoid Israeli products in their personal life.

Read the constitutional challenges for some examples...

As far as I'm aware, the anti-BDS laws only pertain to performance under governmental contracts or similar, or are merely statements of position without legal effect.

Is there a law that prohibits individuals who are not operating under such a contract from boycotting?

All anti-BDS that I am aware of operate through government employment and contracting.

I would however clarify your statement in that the scope often extends not just to the work under contract, but personal and professional behavior outside the scope of contract.

Yes, but it's still under the authority of the contract. That means that expressing support of a boycott is not illegal, it's just grounds for termination of that employment.

That is correct.

They'll probably try to get one in now, mark my words.

Fairly certain Tesla is not based in Israel.

"Illegal" boycott? What? Is Trump really saying that there's a legal requirement to shut up and buy Teslas now?

From the "Free Speech" guys, no less. Take heed, ppl. They only believe in Freedom for themselves.

Not that I care to give Trump any ideas, but if he wants to show "confidence", go buy some of that cratering TSLA stock, not a car. Oh, not all that confident, eh? Yeah, me neither, because one is a rapidly depreciating asset and the other you can at least drive to the store.

Sure... but who's paying for these shares? It's sort of been Trump's modus operandi to harp on how much money he has and then get someone else to pay for what he wants to do.

Apropos of the Morgan Stanley reference in the linked CNBC article. Goldman Sachs and other have MUCH lower price targets. I mean, I'm no expert, but I do know there's a range of opinions on what the appropriate price for TSLA shares are.

Full disclosure... I bought TSLA way back when, before Elon got super-weird in public but sold it in 2021. I made a HUGE profit, but felt it was a little too risky to put a lot of money into so I didn't get "life-changing money" from the deal. Still... I have a personal, good experience from TSLA and try to give Elon the benefit of the doubt, but dang, everyone seems to be going crazy these days.

Give Elon the benefit of the doubt?

- Wants US to leave NATO

- Tells Polish minister of Foreign Affairs "Shut up, little man"

- Gets someone else to level his account on Diablo probably in exchange for a fair chunk of money ) and pretends he is actually the worlds best diablo player

- Calls a man he disagrees with a pedofile on twitter

- Calls veteran jet pilot, astronaut and US Senator a traitor

- Is on X for about 19 hours a day

- Makes false promises about features that Tesla's will have

I could keep on going... "Everyone seems to be going crazy"? You're suggesting Musk is like everyone else?

Nah man, not shares, the actual car. He made a big show out of buying a Tesla (multiple actually) in the White House driveway earlier today.

https://www.reuters.com/world/us/trump-says-he-will-label-vi...

> President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he will label violence against Tesla dealerships domestic terrorism as he appeared with Tesla CEO Elon Musk to show support amid recent "Tesla Takedown" protests and the slump in the company's stock price.

Seems like his and Elon’s symbiotic relationship is only getting tighter
