My understanding is that the comprehension goes down rapidly as you increase your speed, and despite being a pretty speedy reader, I often find myself turning back pages to understand information I did not quite absorb. Maybe I could do with a little bit less speed after all.
I tend to hover around 500wpm without any loss of understanding when I read normally and I can go up to around 900wpm in RSVP reading. When I try to read "slower" or when I have to read slower (e.g. when the book is technical or specifically hard to read) I find my mind wanders a lot and I lose where I left off so I need to restart the page etc. You should definitely do what helps you understand better though!
