Show HN: Tov – a minimalist Bible app for distraction-free reading on iOS

Wanted to share a project I've been working on the last year! It's a simple, thoughtfully designed Bible app designed to help you focus on the text above all else. I felt really dissatisfied with the low quality of Bible apps available. The popular Bible app by YouVersion is so full of popups, feeds, notifications, and social media integrations that the Bible itself seemed like a side feature to me. I set out to make something simple, beautiful, focused, and delightful to use. I also wanted to add a couple features that I saw missing from other Bible apps. The 2 most notable are a reading history where you can easily jump between different chapters you've been reading, and an extensive cross reference feature where you can easily view all of the cross references for any verse in the Bible. I built it with React Native and the lovely react-native-reanimated animation library. It’s available now on iOS.

Great to see an offline Bible app! First time hearing about Berean Standard Bible -- is it endorsed by the Church and does it have all 73 books? If not, would you consider adding Douay-Rheims, which should be out of copyright now?

It is actually a Protestant Bible, so just 66 books :) You can read up about it here: https://berean.bible/

I am using it because I've found it to be my preferred creative commons (no licensing required) Bible available.

As of now I'm not planning on adding any more translations but it's something I'd definitely consider in the future!

Thanks for the insight! There's definitely value in keeping app focused and not overburden user with too many choices. Very interesting that Berean translation connects each translated word with the original Greek or Hebrew text -- I'll need to check it out.

Beautiful app! Really nice aesthetic.

I love the Berean Bible. Really solid translation, with some good audio Bibles available.

If you ever make an Android version, I'll be your first user!

Thank you so much for your app, the app looks very minimal and neat. Too bad it's a Protestant Bible. Already downloaded and a review coming soon.

When I saw the name Tov I figured this was the Hebrew Bible only.

Good catch! The name was obviously inspired by the Hebrew word. My goal was to create a "good" Bible app because I couldn't find one out there!
